Every day in my practice in Zurich, I am asked: "Dr. Enderlin, should I take collagen?" The honest answer is more complex than influencer marketing suggests. After reading this article, you will know which form of collagen actually reaches your skin and why the question of supplementation is not actually the most important point.
What does collagen really do for the skin: Drink, mask or cream?
Summary: Oral collagen in hydrolyzed form (collagen peptides) has been shown to stimulate the body's own collagen production in the skin. Topical collagen in creams and masks does not penetrate the skin, but acts as an effective moisturizer. For structural skin changes, at least three months of consistent use and a medically sound skincare routine are required as a basis.
Quick Facts:
- Effective form: Hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides), taken orally, at least 2.5–5 g daily.
- Topical creams: Collagen molecules are too large for the skin barrier. They bind moisture, but do not build structure.
- The DECALYS approach: Instead of supplying collagen, we activate the skin's own autophagy, the natural regeneration process of your skin, with the Alpha-3 Complex®.

What is collagen and why does it decrease?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. In the dermis (the deeper skin layer), it forms the basic structure that keeps your skin firm, elastic, and resilient. Around 80% of the collagen in the skin is Type I.
Your body produces collagen itself from amino acids, supported by vitamin C, zinc, and copper. The problem: Production continuously decreases from the age of 25. UV radiation significantly accelerates this breakdown. The consequences are well known: finer lines, loss of elasticity, and less "bounce."
What many do not know: the collagen molecule in its natural form is too large to be absorbed through the skin or intestines. The form therefore determines the effect.
Collagen from within: Drinks and Supplements
Hydrolyzed collagen: the only sensible form
Collagen peptides (also "collagen hydrolysate") are enzymatically broken down collagen chains. These small peptides can be absorbed in the intestine, enter the bloodstream, and stimulate fibroblasts (the skin cells responsible for the body's own collagen production) there.
Studies, including a randomized double-blind study from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Seong et al., 2024; doi.org/10.1111/jocd.16026), show measurable improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, and wrinkle depth after regular intake.
What to consider when buying
Not all collagen products are created equal. Three factors determine your choice:
- Source: Marine collagen (from fish) is particularly rich in Type I collagen and has smaller particles than bovine collagen, which facilitates absorption. Both are effective, provided they are hydrolyzed.
- Dose: Studies show effects from 2.5 g daily; for skin and connective tissue, 5–10 g are often recommended.
- Consistency: Plan at least 3 months of consistent use. No supplement replaces medically sound skin care.
Collagen from without: masks and creams
Why collagen does not penetrate the skin
The collagen molecule has a molecular weight of over 300,000 Daltons. The skin barrier only allows molecules from about 500 Daltons to pass through. Collagen creams can therefore not structurally change anything. This is scientific consensus.
What collagen masks still achieve
This does not mean that they are useless. Collagen is an excellent humectant: It binds moisture to the skin's surface. A collagen mask before a big event (such as your next dinner in Zurich) gives your skin an immediate glow effect: it looks plumper, more hydrated, and more radiant.
For long-term changes in the dermis, however, you need active ingredients that stimulate cell regeneration from within. We will get to that in the next section.

The DECALYS approach: Autophagy instead of supplementation
Why I don't just tell you to "take collagen"
In my practice at DECAMED in Zurich, I see patients daily who come to me with a bag full of supplements. The problem is not the collagen - it's the order.
If you have a leaky foundation, you shouldn't build on it, but repair it first.
The DECALYS approach is based on autophagy (the process by which the skin breaks down and renews damaged cells). Our Alpha-3 Complex® activates exactly this mechanism. This is not an external supplement, but the activation of your body's own repair system.
The three measures I recommend to you
-
Protect: UV radiation is the biggest collagen destroyer. An SPF 50 is mandatory daily, even on cloudy days over Lake Zurich. DECALYS' Lotion multi-défense SPF 50 also protects you from blue light and environmental stress.
-
Stimulate: Vitamin C serums and antioxidants protect existing collagen and stimulate new synthesis. The Sérum Alpha Régénérant is designed exactly for this.
-
Support: If you choose an oral supplement, look for hydrolyzed marine or bovine collagen peptides, at least 2.5 g daily, for a period of at least 3 months.
Supplements are a complement, not a replacement, for a medically sound skincare routine.
Conclusion
Collagen works, but only in the right form, in the right way, and with realistic expectations. Oral hydrolyzed collagen can improve skin structure long-term. Topical products moisturize but do not build structure. And the best collagen booster remains daily sun protection.
What convinces me in my practice: The patients who have the best skin long-term are not those with the largest supplement budget, but those with the most consistent routine.
